DISCOVERY CENTER

Purpose:
The Discovery Center helps students overcome academic difficulties which may be due to learning differences, with the ultimate goal being to help them reach their highest potential in fulfilling God's purpose for them.

The Center provides an individual program of educational therapy designed for students who are not realizing their academic potential because of difficulties in perceptual or thinking processes.

"The Lord will fulfill His purpose for me: your love, O Lord, endures forever--do not abandon the work of your hands." Psalm 138:8

Johnstown Christian School believes that each child has a unique role in God's plan, and is a special individual created and loved by God.

Exceptional children are a part of God's creation and have dignity, worth, and purpose whether they AE mentally handicapped, average, or gifted. Every child who, by faith in Him, becomes a member of the Body of Christ, needs training in every area of his potential so he may be equipped to fulfill the unique purpose God has for him.

Program:
The Discovery Center is a program for learning disabled students. Children with average to superior intelligence who have specific deficits in perception and/or cognition are said to be learning disabled. They typically do not learn effectively by traditional instructional methods.

Students may be incorrectly considered slow learners, immature, or lazy. Some of the symptoms commonly observed are:

* Hyperactivity or Hypoactivity
* Difficulty in handling symbols
* Difficulty in abstract thinking
* Inability to retain or recall
* Cramped or illegible writing
* Short attention span
* Poor listening skills
* Recurring spelling errors
* Poor line muscle control
* Difficulty in reading
* Difficulty with oral/written expression
* Reversals of letters, numbers, or words
* Confusion with left/right or other directions

In 1992, the JCS Discovery Center was accredited by the National Institute for Learning Disabilities in Norfolk and to date our educational therapists have assisted more than 50 students whose difficulties were due to learning disabilities. Reaccreditation was achieved in 1999. Today, Mrs. Kathy Keafer, director of the JCS Discovery Center, also serves as a Consultant on the Professional Support Team and the Instructional Team of NILD.
